Discovering Million Dollar Bacon: The Ultimate Indulgence

What Is Million Dollar Bacon?

Million Dollar Bacon is a luxurious twist on traditional bacon, celebrated for its rich, sweet, and savory flavor profile that transforms breakfast dishes. Originating in trendy brunch spots across the United States, this gourmet candied bacon is typically thick cut and glazed with a mix of brown sugar, black pepper, and spices. The result is a crispy texture with a caramelized finish that delights the taste buds.

The key ingredients include high quality, thick cut bacon, balanced with sweet and spicy seasonings. Common additions like maple syrup, cayenne pepper, and even a hint of bourbon elevate its unique flavor. This combination enhances the bacon’s natural smokiness, creating a complex taste that’s hard to resist.

In recent years, candied bacon has become a brunch staple, its popularity driven by the social media era where food presentation and unique flavors are highly prized. This dish offers a luxurious take on a classic ingredient, appealing to both food enthusiasts and casual diners. Whether enjoyed on its own or as a gourmet topping on burgers, salads, or sandwiches, Million Dollar Bacon is a beloved choice for elevating any culinary experience.

Flavor Variations and Enhancements

The flavor possibilities for Million Dollar Bacon are endless. Experimenting with different sweeteners can elevate your dish. Maple syrup offers a rich, caramel-like sweetness, while brown sugar provides a delightful crunch, and honey adds a floral sweetness. Each sweetener offers a unique twist, allowing you to tailor your bacon to your taste preferences.

Adding spices can further enhance your candied bacon. Cayenne pepper introduces a pleasant heat that balances the sweetness, while freshly cracked black pepper adds a sharp kick. A sprinkle of cinnamon can create an unexpected yet inviting flavor profile.

Creative toppings and pairings can also elevate your Million Dollar Bacon. Drizzle it with balsamic glaze or pair it with fresh herbs like rosemary or thyme. Serve it alongside creamy scrambled eggs or on a bed of arugula for a delightful brunch experience. These variations will impress your guests and make your bacon a standout dish.

Reheating Million Dollar Bacon

For reheating, the oven is ideal. Preheat to 350°F and place the bacon on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Heat for about 10 minutes, or until crispy again. An air fryer can also revive the bacon’s crunchiness without drying it out.

For longer storage, freeze the bacon. Wrap individual slices in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer-safe bag, removing as much air as possible. This method keeps the bacon fresh for up to 2 months. Label the bag with the date to track its shelf life. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

Serving Suggestions for Million Dollar Bacon

Million Dollar Bacon is perfect for elevating any meal, especially brunch. Serve it with fluffy scrambled eggs and crispy hash browns, or incorporate it into a breakfast sandwich with a fried egg and fresh avocado on a toasted bagel. Create a brunch platter with Million Dollar Bacon, artisanal cheeses, and seasonal fruits for a visually stunning spread. You can even use Million Dollar Bacon as a garnish in a Bloody Mary!

Beyond brunch, Million Dollar Bacon enhances sandwiches and salads. Add it to a BLT or burger for a smoky, sweet twist, or crumble it over mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, and a tangy vinaigrette for a delightful crunch. The contrast with fresh vegetables creates a balanced dish.

Impress guests with creative appetizers featuring Million Dollar Bacon. Wrap pieces around asparagus spears or jalapeño poppers before baking for a savory delight. 1) Who or what is your biggest culinary influence?

Grant Achatz had stage 4 tongue cancer, lost his taste for months and was still able to become a great chef that has four Michelin stars. His story is a huge inspiration to my culinary journey.

2) What recipes/dishes do friends and family request that you make/bake the most?

My family always requests my crème brulée, although it didn’t start out that way. I first made it one day in high school and it didn’t turn out correctly. I was upset so decided to try it at again at home. After finally perfecting the crème brulée, I made it for a Christmas dessert and my family absolutely loved it and the rest is history.

3) What has surprised you most about attending culinary school?

The biggest surprise is that I am not only good at baking but also the savory side of cooking. I really thought I was going to have a hard time with savory food because my primary background was baking sweet treats.

4) What’s the best kept secret about attending Blackhawk?

The teacher and staff really do care about you, your education and are always there to talk or help solve any issues you may be going through. The school is very supportive of their students.

5) What is your favorite Jones product?

Jones Breakfast Sausage links are the best! My favorite flavors are the Mild Pork and Maple Pork.

6) Anything else we should know about you?

As a child I spent a lot of time with my papa who happened to be a very picky eater. Therefore, everything he ate was a really basic recipe without much spice and seasoning. As I grew up and was cooking for myself, I was always worried about over seasoning my food. It’s still actually a concern because of the food I was raised on.

Sausage and Cheese Pairings Made Easy

At Jones Dairy Farm, we pride ourselves on the delicious, savory flavors of our meat products. But every great dish has its perfect complement, and in the world of food pairings, cheese reigns supreme.

To help you elevate your culinary creations, we’ve curated a guide to pairing our meats with cheeses and spreads, inspired by the three key principles of pairing:

  1. Like with Like: Pair similar flavors to create harmony.
  2. Grows Together, Goes Together: Combine ingredients from the same region for natural compatibility.
  3. Opposites Attract: Marry contrasting flavors for an exciting, balanced experience.

Let’s explore how to pair each of our signature products with the perfect cheeses and accompaniments.

Create the Perfect Charcuterie Board

Breakfast Sausage

Rich and savory, our breakfast sausage pairs beautifully with creamy and sharp cheeses.

  • Cheeses: Colby Jack, sharp cheddar (like Old Croc Extra Sharp or Grand Reserve), Rustic Red Cheddar, muenster, or butterkäse.

What are BHAs?

BHAs, or butylated hydroxyanisole, are synthetic antioxidants commonly used in the food industry as additives. These compounds help extend the shelf life of processed foods by preventing spoilage. Understanding what are BHAs is crucial due to ongoing discussions about their potential health implications.

Understanding BHAs

What is BHA in food? BHA is a synthetic food additive used primarily as a preservative. It appears as a white, waxy solid that is insoluble in water but dissolves in organic solvents. The primary function of BHA is to act as an antioxidant, preventing the oxidation of fats and oils in food products, which can lead to rancidity and deterioration in flavor, texture, and nutritional value.

BHAs are found in a variety of food products, including processed meats, snacks, cereals, baked goods, and beverages. This helps in prolonging the shelf life and maintaining the quality of these products over time.

Regulatory authorities like the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strictly regulate the use of BHA in food products. The FDA has established maximum allowable concentrations for BHA in different food categories to ensure safe consumption. While BHA is deemed safe by these regulatory bodies, some studies have suggested potential health risks, which are continually monitored and evaluated by these organizations.

At Jones Dairy Farm, we prioritize providing high-quality, safe food products. We strictly adhere to all safety regulations and guidelines set forth by regulatory authorities, and have chosen not to use BHA in any of our products. Our commitment to excellence ensures that you can enjoy our offerings with confidence.

Why Do Companies Add BHAs to Their Food?

BHA is added to food products to enhance freshness and extend shelf life. This additive plays a crucial role in preventing oxidation, which can lead to spoilage and degradation of food quality. One of the primary reasons companies use BHA is its ability to preserve food freshness. When food is exposed to air, oxidation can occur, breaking down fats and oils. This process not only alters the taste and texture of the food but also diminishes its nutritional value. By adding BHA, companies can effectively slow down oxidation, ensuring that their products retain their original flavors and nutritional content for a longer period.

BHA also significantly extends the shelf life of food. When microorganisms such as bacteria and molds come into contact with food, they can cause spoilage and pose health risks. BHA acts as a barrier against these harmful microorganisms, inhibiting their growth and preventing premature spoilage. This enables companies to produce food that remains fresh and safe for consumption for an extended period, reducing waste and improving overall product quality.

Preventing oxidation is essential for maintaining the appearance, taste, and nutritional value of food. Oxidized fats and oils can develop off-flavors and unpleasant odors, compromising the sensory experience of consuming the food. Additionally, oxidation can lead to the loss of important nutrients, such as vitamins and antioxidants. By incorporating BHA into their food products, companies can protect against these negative effects, ensuring that consumers can enjoy food that looks, tastes, and nourishes as intended.

Potential Health Concerns

Understanding the potential health concerns associated with food additives like BHA is essential for informed consumers. Research on BHA’s health effects has aimed to determine its safety for human consumption. Some studies suggest that BHA may have carcinogenic properties and could potentially be linked to certain types of cancer. However, it’s important to note that these studies were primarily conducted on animals, and the effects on humans are not fully understood.

Controversies surrounding what is BHA safety have arisen due to conflicting research findings. While some studies indicate potential harm, others have found no significant adverse effects on human health. The FDA considers BHA to be generally recognized as safe, or GRAS, for use in food products within specified limits.

Government regulations and restrictions on BHA use vary across countries. In the United States, the FDA regulates the use of BHA as a food preservative, setting limits on the amount allowed in various food products to ensure consumer safety. These regulations aim to minimize potential health risks associated with BHA consumption. At Jones Dairy Farm, we understand the importance of providing safe and high-quality products to our customers. We have chosen not to use BHA as a preservative in any of our products. In our sausage, we freeze our products right after they’re cooked to lock in flavor and prevent the development of bacteria and spoilage.

Why Jones Dairy Farm Doesn’t Use BHAs or BHTs

At Jones Dairy Farm, we believe in providing our customers with high-quality, all natural sausage products. That’s why we choose not to use BHA or BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) as preservatives in any of our products. Instead, we employ alternative methods to ensure the freshness and safety of our food.

One alternative to synthetic preservatives like BHA and BHT is the use of natural preservatives. Derived from plants and other natural sources, these preservatives help extend the shelf life of food without the use of artificial additives. For example, we use natural spices like rosemary extract and celery powder in our products, which not only provide flavor but also act as natural preservatives.

Exploring other food preservation methods is another way we maintain the quality of our products without relying on BHA or BHT. We employ flash freezing to keep our sausage fresh. These methods help to prevent the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms, ensuring that our products remain safe for consumption.

When choosing BHA-free products, consider looking for items that clearly state they are free from BHA and BHT on their packaging. Additionally, opting for products made with natural preservatives can provide a healthier alternative. At Jones Dairy Farm, we are proud to offer a range of BHA-free sausage products made with natural ingredients and free from artificial preservatives.

In Business Magazine Recognizes Jones Dairy Farm

Jones Dairy Farm proudly accepts recognition as a leader in family business.

In Business Madison celebrated the region’s exemplary organizations and influential executives during its second annual Business of the Year Awards, held on Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, at The Edgewater Hotel. Jones Dairy Farm was honored to receive the Family Business of the Year Award, a distinction that highlights the achievements of family-owned businesses making significant contributions to the Greater Madison area.

In accepting the award in front an audience of over 300, Jones Dairy Farm Chairman and CEO Philip Jones said, “This award reflects our commitment to family values and the incredible work of our employees. We are deeply proud of our roots in Fort Atkinson and are committed to continuing to support and uplift the community that has supported us for generations.”

A Legacy Seven Generations Strong

The Jones family has been an integral part of Wisconsin’s history for many generations. It all began in the late 1830s when settler Milo Jones established the family farm, even before Wisconsin achieved statehood. Milo’s pioneering efforts in producing and selling cheese and butter laid the foundation for what would become a storied legacy.

In the late 1880s, Milo’s son, Milo Cornelius Jones, pivoted the family’s operations to pork sausage production after rheumatoid arthritis prevented him from continuing his civil engineering career. This pivotal decision shaped the family’s future and established Jones Dairy Farm as a household name.

Today, the company continues to thrive under the leadership of sixth-generation family member Philip Jones. With seventh-generation family members already contributing, the future of the Jones legacy looks bright.

A Commitment to Community and Quality

Jones Dairy Farm’s contributions to Wisconsin extend beyond its meat products. The company has a long-standing tradition of supporting local communities through philanthropic initiatives and capital investments that aim to enhance the lives of Wisconsin residents.

The company’s products are widely available throughout Wisconsin at grocers like Woodman’s, Piggly Wiggly, Sendik’s, and Festival Foods. Jones products also serve the foodservice sector, with offerings found at establishments such as Kwik Trip, Original Pancake House, and Fireside Dinner Theater. Nationally, Jones products are sold at nearly all grocery stores, including Walmart and Costco, and internationally, they reach consumers in nearly 20 countries.

In 2015, Jones Dairy Farm opened the Jones Market, transforming a century-old manufacturing plant into a 2,600-square-foot destination featuring Wisconsin-made cheeses, bakery items, and the company’s own products. The Market draws over 130 bus tours annually, along with countless visitors from across the state.

Recognizing Excellence

The Family Business of the Year Award was determined by an independent panel of judges, including Scott Ducke (Lake Ridge Bank), Rebecca Prochaska (Potter Lawson), and Maiken Westphal (Westphal & Co.). Their selection underscores the value of Jones Dairy Farm’s rich history, community impact, and dedication to quality.

MSG in Meat: All You Need to Know

MSG, or monosodium glutamate, is a well-known flavor-enhancing ingredient found in many foods including soups, sauces, and broths. In the food industry, it’s also known as E621. Although it brings an umami flavor to a product, some consumers have made the decision to avoid it despite the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) claim that MSG is “generally recognized as safe.” MSG also has a bad reputation since it tends to be found in ultra-processed foods.

Debates regarding health effects have resulted in the need for clear labeling in many countries, including here in the U.S. Although no Jones products contain MSG, here’s what you need to know about MSG in meat, including how to check if a product contains added MSG, so you’re better educated about what you feed yourself and your family.

What is MSG and why is it used in meat products?

MSG is a flavor enhancer that comes from glutamic acid. This is a naturally occurring amino acid found in many foods. MSG intensifies and enhances umami taste without the need to add excessive amounts of salt or other seasonings.

This makes it especially popular in meat products such as processed meats, sausages, and canned meats to improve overall taste.

Do sausage, ham, and bacon contain MSG?

Glutamate is naturally found in various foods, particularly those high in protein, including sausage, ham, and bacon. However, some meat producers choose to add synthetic MSG as a concentrated enhancer to boost flavor, and this is the additive ingredient that can cause concern among some consumers.

To check if a meat product has added MSG, read the ingredients list.

This is easy to do because MSG must be labeled if added directly to a food product. In fact, it is specifically mandated in the U.S. by FDA regulation. These labeling rules are part of a broader commitment to food safety and transparency, especially for additives that might concern sensitive consumers.

Key terms to look for on labels for MSG.

Understanding the labeling terms for MSG can help you make informed choices about what you buy, and to spot what contains MSG. Some of the common names for ingredients that may contain MSG or glutamate include:

Again, products containing MSG must clearly display it on the ingredients list.

No MSG in any Jones Dairy Farm products, ever.

Whether it’s breakfast sausage, ham, bacon, Canadian bacon, braunschweiger, or meatballs, Jones Dairy Farm products are made from simple ingredients and without additives like MSG. Every bite reflects the Jones family’s dedication to do things the right way. So, the next time you’re looking for breakfast meats that taste as good as they make you feel, remember Jones Dairy Farm.
